Wednesday, March 11, 7pm To celebrate the launching of “Captive Portal,” the CCA presents a screening of “The Hacker Wars” with an introduction by Tal Messing and Yoav Lifshitz. “The Hacker Wars” (2014) is an acclaimed 90-minute documentary by Vivien Lesnik Weisman about the targeting of (h)ac(k)tivists and journalists by the US government.
Ripped from international headlines, “The Hacker Wars” takes you to the front lines of the high-stakes battle over the fate of the Internet, freedom, and privacy. It tells the story of the anarchic troll provocateur Andrew “weev” Aurenheimer, prodigy hacker hero Jeremy Hammond, and incendiary watchdog journalist Barrett Brown — three larger than life characters whose separate quests to expose the secrets of empire hurled them into a fateful collision course with shadowy corporations, the FBI, and the ultimate betrayal by one of their own.
Featuring interviews with Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Glenn Greenwald, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Chris Hedges, and NSA whistleblower Thomas Drake, “The Hacker Wars” traces the steps that led from the Internet’s murkiest corners to the heavy shadow of censorship and a century’s worth of prison time.
Internationally acclaimed filmmaker Vivien Lesnik Weisman is a regular contributor to The Huffington Post. Her films have opened at the Tribeca Film Festival and been the recipients of Grand Prix Documentary at the Festival Internacional du Cinema Latin de Paris, the IFP Fledgling Fund Award for Best WIP, IFP Best Emerging Latino Filmmaker, Audience Award at The Vancouver International Latino Film Festival, First Coral Award at the Festival de Nuevo Cine Latino Americano (Havana International Film Festival), the Grand Prix Signis at the Festival Internacional du Cinema Latin de Paris, Golden Eagle, UCLA Spot Light Award, as well as the Social Justice Award Finalist at The Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
Tal Messing and Yoav Lifshitz are theoreticians, lectors, creators, and curators, and are also the founders of the Pirate Party Israel. Among their projects to date are a fake mayoral campaign for Daphni Leef (March 2013); “The Unobject” exhibition at HaShuk Street Gallery, Tel Aviv (2014); “The Unobject: The Re-Materialization of the Concept,” and essay published in Bezalel’s Journal of Visual & Material Culture (August 2014); and “Occupy WiFi,” a conceptual and digital activist project (August 2014, ongoing).
