Curator Talk: Dorothee Richter

The CCA is pleased to present an evening with renowned curator, Dorothee Richter, who will showcase her innovative projects initiated with young curators, including the latest one, Curating Your Context, which connects specific public issues with experimental curatorial practice. Curating Your Context  (conceived in collaboration with Andrea Roca) is an in-progress project designed to highlight and question local contexts through the collaboration of curators, artists, and “the public.” (concept D. Richter and Andrea Roca).

Dorothee Richter is head of the postgraduate Programme in Curating, Zurich University of the Arts, and publisher of the web journal www.on-curating.org. She has organized symposia such as Curating Degree Zero (an international symposium on curating), GAK, Bremen (with Barnaby Drabble) 1998; Dialogues and Debates (feminist positions in contemporary visual arts) 1999; The Quintessiental Hold of Images 2001 (with Sigrid Adorf and Kathrin Heinz); The Visuality of Theory vs. The Theory of the Visual (with Nina Moentmann); Re-Visions of the Display: Exhibition Scenarios, Their Readings and Their Publics, Migros Museum (with Jennifer John and Sigrid Schade); Community_ perhaps (with Jörg Huber a. Elke Bippus); Institution as Medium. Curating as Institutional Critique? (Concept with Rein Wolfs), Fridericianum Kassel.

Richter was Director of the Lichthaus in Bremen, Artistic Director of Kuenstlerhaus Bremen, Research Associate for Exhibition Displays at the School of Art and Design in Zurich. She serves as a PhD adviser at the University of Reading’s PhD program in curating. Her most recent curatorial project is a collaboration with the Kunsthmusem Thun titled inter/act: New Social Sculptures. Richter’s publications include: Curating Degree Zero, Nurnberg 1999; Dialogues and Debates, Nurnberg, 2000; Programming for a Kuenstlerhaus, Kuenstlerhaus Bremen; 2002; The Visuality of Theory vs. The Theory of the Visual, Frankfurt 2004, Curating Critique, Edinburgh, Frankfurt 2008, Re-Visions of the Display: Exhibition Scenarios, Their Readings and Their Publics, Zürich 2009, Mit Sein, 2010; 16 Issues of On-Curating.org
