CINEMAY – Season III, Episode I: Figuring and Configure by Moriah Evans

The first episode of CINEMAY’s third season is dedicated to Moriah Evans’s Figuring and Configure (both 2018). The compositions of Moriah Evans (*1980, Springfield OH, United States; lives and works in New York) are processed by procedures rather than forms, insisting on the value of bodies in motion and in relation. Furthermore, her practice questions how we dance together and engage in social relationships through the choreographic pathways of dancing and as witnesses within the performative event – interrogating dance history as well as the exhibitionism that is inherent in the discipline of performance.
Evans’s choreographic work has been presented at The Kitchen, SculptureCenter, Whitney Museum of American Art, MoMA PS1, Danspace Project, Issue Project Room, Judson Memorial Church, American Realness and New York Live Arts, all in New York, as well as Theater Kampnagel in Hamburg, Théâtre de l’usine in Geneva, Atelier de Paris / CDCN (Centre de développement chorégraphique national) in Paris and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington DC. In 2015, Evans was shortlisted for the Bessie Award for Emerging Choreographer. She is Editor-in-Chief of the Movement Research Performance Journal, and in 2011 she initiated The Bureau for the Future of Choreography, a collective apparatus involved in research processes and practices investigating participatory images of performance and systems of choreography.
About Figuring and Configure
Originating from internal physical processes, Moriah Evans’ Figuring and Configure take micro movements as method. Through pacing and scale, the physical gestures of the performers make malleable the inner qualities of the body, as well as the sensation of time. These works question the very space in which the dance performance occurs, whether it is the theatrical space or the museum or gallery space. During this episode, the audience will have the opportunity to watch excerpts of Figuring and Configure, and to engage in a live conversation with Evans.
CINEMAY is a screening series curated by choreographer May Zarhy (*1984, Tel Aviv. Lives and works in Tel Aviv and Frankfurt). Once a month, Zarhy presents documentation of stage works that haven’t been performed in Israel, either because the pieces are no longer presented, cannot be toured, or were made by artists who refuse to come to Israel. The program presents full-length documentation of these selected dance and performance pieces followed by a video conference with their respective author. While the first season of CINEMAY was presented at Kelim Choreographic Center in Bat Yam, Israel, in 2017, and featured works by Eszter Salamon, Taldans (Mustafa Kaplan and Filiz Sızanlı), Martin Schick, Panaibra Gabriel Canda, and Maria Campos Arroyo, the second season of CINEMAY was presented at CCA Tel Aviv, and features works by Lucy Guerin, Youness Atbane, Germaine Acogny, Ioannis Mandafounis and Fabrice Mazliah and Noé Soulier.
