Artis and the Center for Contemporary Art are pleased to present an evening with Ivo Mesquita, one of Latin America’s most renowned curators and a seminal figure in the growth of the São Paulo Biennial and Brazilian art at large. Through his presentation of the Pinacoteca do Estado in São Paulo, Mesquita will discuss the evolving art world in Brazil – one of the world’s fastest growing economies and a mecca for art lovers the world over.
This talk is part of an ongoing lecture series presented by Artis and the Center for Contemporary Art.
Ivo mesquita (born in São Paulo, 1951) is Artistic Director at Pinacoteca do Estado, in São Paulo, where he started working as Chief Curator in 2006. He worked as researcher and assistant curator at São Paulo Bienal Foundation (1980-88), collaborated as guest curator for the 20th (1989) and 24th (1998) bienal, and was the Chief Curator for the 28th Bienal (2008). From 1996 to 2007 Mesquita was Visiting Professor at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, New York and Director of the Museu de Arte Moderna, in São Paulo (1999-2000). As an independent curator Mesquita developed exhibitions, projects, and curatorial collaborations with institutions such as the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Canada; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey, Mexico; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; The Bronx Museum, New York; Fundación ‘laCaixa’, Barcelona; Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid; and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Barcelona, among others. He was the curator of the Brazilian Pavilion in the 1999 and 2009 Venice Biennales, and co-curator of InSite’97 and 2000 in San Diego/Tijuana. He is a board member of CIMAM (2007-2013) and lives and works in São Paulo, Brazil.
