Alona Rodeh: ABOVE AND BEYOND

02.05.2013 - 20.07.2013

For her solo exhibition at the CCA, Alona Rodeh transformed the main CCA gallery space with an exceptional installation using sound, light, and architectural interventions. Above and Beyond takes its inspiration from Holy Land theme parks and biblical video games, recreated Jewish icons rented for Bar and Bat Mizvahs and Las Vegas chic, as well as the show business of religion. Using her signature techniques, such as smoke, projected light, and sound performance, Rodeh’s ambitious project will radically restructure the CCA gallery and call into question familiar ideas of cultural and religious sites, juxtaposing the mechanisms of both. Rodeh aims to create a visual and sensorial dissonance that contrasts religion and art through a confluence of the two that is both familiar and strange, leading viewers to consider the spiritual dimensions of art and the visual and physical expressions of religion.

Alona Rodeh was born in 1979 in Israel and is based in Tel Aviv. Her diverse practice relies on a wide range of media, constructing time-based installations often described as “performance without performers.” Graduating from Bezalel Academy of Art’s MFA program (2009), including exchange studies at RCA, London, Rodeh was h

onored  with the following awards, among others: BM:UKK AIR, Vienna (2011), Young Artist Prize (2011) and Artist-Teacher Prize (2009), both from the Israeli Ministry of Culture; and Artis (2012) and Outset grants (2012, 2013). Rodeh has exhibited at the 54th Venice Biennial; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; and Plug In ICA, Canada, and has presented commissioned projects at the Israeli Center for Digital Art, Holon; Herzliya Museum of Art; and Petach Tikva Museum of Art, among others. In September 2013, Rodeh will embark on a year-long residency at Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin.

On Saturday, June 8th at 8:00pm an artist talk will be held with Alona Rodeh
